Let’s make the message clear from the beginning. You should embrace the challenge and just do it!

When the vacation to Croatia was decided I started to look for cycling routes and stumbled on the Sveti Jure top which is part of the Bikovo National Park. I have to say, road cycling is not big in Croatia. It was impossible to find a company where I could rent a bike for road cycling, MTBs absolutelly, but no road cycling bikes. With help from people I didn’t know but got in contact with via Strava a bike was rented and delivered to my hotel the day after we arrived.

"One of the many fantastic serpentines on the way up."

I started my ride in the main village of the area, right outside Makarska, and even if I got up a 6.20 it was quite a’lot of traffic, people going to their work I guess. Cycling threw the quiet harbour gives a special and relaxed feeling and with maximum 30 min cycling the climb starts, not the main Sveti climb but beautiful and scenic climb to the entrance of the National Park and I remember looking out at the sea and islands below. Sweaty but fantastic. The temperature had started to rise.

To enter the Bivoko Park, and the final climb of 23 km, I have to pay 25 kn (about 3,5 Euro) at the park entrance. Already at this time it was really warm. Prepare with a´lot of water. I had 1,5 liter in the bottle cages and in addition 50 cl extra in my back pocket. It turnes out that water could be bought at one place, in addition the guard at the top had tap water, but would not take the risk having to little water.

Reading about Sveti Jure I had learned that it was part of Tour of Croatia stage 3 2018. Click above or search on Google and you will have about two ours of great cycling to watch and see the climb. Now it was my turn. Clicking the pedals and starting to work my way up.

Sveti Jure Climb

The first part has a steady climb with trees along the road and the sun behind the mountain. The temperature was ok when taking my pedal strokes towards the top and I remember thinking that the adventure and the beautiful nature starts from the very beginning. The road are not god but not bad either.

Getting further up the the nature is more rocky and bare. After the first initial climb the cycling get more flat but still slowly but steadily get upwards. Scenic and I even met what think is wild horses. Not much traffic at all. Only park guards passing by in their cars towards to the top. The roads, even if they are narrow sometimes, are more than good enough and don´t let those hinder you from visit and climb Sveti Jure.

The final part is the really spectacular climb with fantastic serpentines. A think I managed to catch it on picture too. View in all directions. Towards the sea and inland. Go there, enjoy and be the Campione.
